Guru Purnima 2026 falls on Wednesday, 29th July — the Ashadha full moon when we bow to the Guru, the one who carries us from darkness to light. It is also Vyasa Purnima, honouring Maharishi Ved Vyas, the Adi Guru who gave us the Vedas and the Mahabharata.
Guru Purnima 2026 — At a Glance
- Date: Wednesday, 29th July 2026
- Purnima Tithi: 6:18 PM (28 July) to 8:05 PM (29 July)

Why the Word "Guru" Carries So Much
"Gu" means darkness; "Ru", the one who removes it. A Guru, quite simply, is the one who lights the lamp for us — which is why our tradition places the Guru right beside the divine:
"Guru Brahma, Guru Vishnu, Guru Devo Maheshwara, Guru Sakshat Param Brahma, Tasmai Shri Gurave Namah."
A Full Moon Made for Learning
Guru Purnima arrives just four days after Ashadi Ekadashi, as Chaturmas begins. In older times, wandering sages would halt their travels and settle in one place to teach through these four months — so this became the day disciples gather at their Guru feet to begin a season of study and sadhana. It is remembered too as the day Buddha gave his first sermon at Sarnath.
A Simple Guru Puja at Home
- Bathe early, wear clean white or yellow clothes, and tidy your place of worship.
- Place a photo of your Guru, Ved Vyas, or your ishta devata on a clean cloth.
- Light a ghee diya; offer sandalwood, akshat, flowers, fruit and a garland.
- Recite the Guru Vandana and Guru mantra, and read or reflect on their teachings.
- Remember your Guru teachings with gratitude, and resolve to live by them.
Guru Purnima is above all a day of gratitude. Remember those who shaped you — your gurus, teachers and elders — and resolve to carry their teachings into how you live.
Guru Purnima and Your Jupiter
Here is what many forget: in astrology, Guru is also the planet Jupiter (Brihaspati) — the karaka of wisdom, marriage, children, dharma and good fortune. A strong Jupiter gives clarity and respect; a weak one brings delays, confusion and a loss of direction. Ruled by the Guru graha himself, this is the perfect day to begin remedies for a weak Jupiter — the Brihaspati mantra, a Thursday vrat, donating yellow items, or a Yellow Sapphire (Pukhraj) worn only after a proper kundali analysis.
Mantras for the Day
- Guru Mantra: Om Gurave Namah
- Brihaspati Beej Mantra: Om Graam Greem Graum Sah Gurave Namah
